Starting a small business is exciting and worth the risks. It really is an education in itself. Whether you plan on working at home or opening a business in your community, there are a couple questions you need to ask yourself. If starting your own business is something you want to do, you will have many opportunities that you can pursue to make your dream a reality. On the other hand, there is no business which is as quick and as easy as one would like it to be. The goal of most owners is to have it become profitable so it can take the place of their normal job. What are your goals and dreams? Three things that are brought up a lot are planning, financing, and launching a online business. We review all three below.

Planning

Small Business Ideas

Smart business planning will help you organize your goals and keep you on track towards success. This is the most important step to building a successful company. You have to think as far ahead as when you expect to make your first sale and when you plan to be profitable. Before you launch your product, make sure you document your ideas thoroughly and concisely for each area, not only at the beginning but through the whole existence of the business.

Financing

Acquiring financing is critical to any endeavor. Every business is going to have different startup financial requirements. Some owners go into business and have no clue on how to deal with the financial aspects of running a company. Financing is one of the most important factors entrepreneurs should look into when opening a business. One thing that always ruins a small business faster then anything else is lack of funding. Remember, when starting a business you are the chief financial officer. Don’t go into any venture under funded. Look into small business loans and grants. Here is something else to think about, what do your own personal expenses look like? Are you having trouble keeping your personal expenses and spending down? If so, it might not be time to go this on your own. Maybe a partner will help.

Online Business

Many more people are trying to achieve success by working online. Your online or home based business will survive if you have a plan and are fully funded. The beginning and launch stages of your online experience are the most critical to your existence. You need an effective marketing strategy to make it through the startup challenges. Starting a small online business does not have to be a challenge, especially when you have done your homework. You must be well equipped with the right knowledge, tools, and strategy. There are so many online ideas to choose from. Make sure you choose the right one for you.

Smart planning and being well financed are the two most important aspects of any business, online or not. You will need support every step of the way. I have heard some people say starting and running a business is better than a college degree. Well, class is in session. Good luck!

Trade shows are a great place to network. People are there to meet other people, and learn about who’s doing what. These 6 tips will help you maximize the networking opportunities at any trade show.

1. Meet the exhibitors

Networking

The exhibitors at any trade show paid to be able to talk to you. Make an effort to visit as many vendors as you can. Learn about them and what they have to offer. You might also ask who their target market is, or who their ideal client is.

2. Make it fun!

Consider making a game out of your networking efforts. Try to meet at least one new person every 10-15 minutes. That’ll give you enough time to spend 5 or 10 minutes getting to know them. You’ll also have a few minutes left over to meet your next new friend.

3. Listen

When you’re meeting new people listen more than you talk. Try to find a common interest. Ask them about their business and their personal interests. This information will come in handy later when you follow-up.

4. Give people value, be a resource

Be listening for ways that you can help people. Direct them to the exhibitor you met earlier who might have a great solution for them. Tell them about the great drawing you just entered, and suggest that they do the same. Offer to introduce them to someone else you know at the event who you think they might be able to make a good connection with.

5. Use business cards

Business cards are a tool. After you meet someone be sure to ask them for a business card. Take a couple of seconds to make a couple of notes about what you learned about them. Before handing someone your own business card you might want to write a quick note that will add value. Write the name of a website they might find useful (NetworkInAustin.com perhaps?), a book, another networking event. Anything that will make your card stand out, because you’ve show that you’re a valuable resource.

6. Follow-up

This is probably the most important tip of all. Your networking efforts at any networking event are unlikely to bear any fruit if you don’t take the time to follow-up with those you met. Be sure to make at least one, preferably two, contacts during the week following the show, with each person you met. A hand written note and a voicemail. A brief phone conversation and an e-mail. Just be sure to reconnect so you can truly begin building a relationship.

Happy networking!

 Trade Show Networking Tips

Scott Ingram is the founder of etworkInAustin.com a <a target="_new" href="http<b nofollow,external"color:#000;background:#ffff66">:”>networking resource for networkers in Central Texas. When he’s not out building relationships at trade shows and other business networking events you’ll find Scott out running with friends on the trails of Town Lake in Austin, Texas or spending time with his growing family which currently consists of 2 cats and dog and his expecting wife Emily.

Business owners seeking to use social networking for marketing purposes often ask, “What is the best social networking site to use to get new customers?” In the early days of social networking, experts advised entrepreneurs and business owners to choose the networks they felt most comfortable using and explore their resources, analyzing their acquisition campaigns to see which ones performed the best. While this remains good advice, new research from CMO provides data on which sites tend to perform best for acquisition.

What Is Customer Acquisition in Direct and Online Marketing?

Networking

Customer acquisition refers to a business’ ability to gain new customers. Businesses set different goals for acquisition campaigns. A business to business company that relies upon direct and online marketing methods to gain leads for its sales force may measure their acquisition campaign success by how many leads each campaign generates. A consumer catalog may measure acquisition by how many new customers order from a recent catalog mailing. The main point to remember is that acquisition always refers to something new added to the company’s database, either a new customer or a lead.

Companies must run acquisition campaigns constantly to refresh their databases and improve profits. Customer attrition, or customers who leave to go to a competitor or never order again, is a fact of life for most businesses. Acquisition campaigns fill the lead or sales pipeline and must exceed the attrition rate for true growth.

Social Networking Sites Best for Acquisition

According to the CMO reseach, two sites stand out for driving traffic to websites and thus qualifying as acquisition tools: Digg and Stumble Upon.

Digg is a social networking site that allows users to submit links to content. People browsing the social networking site can click the link and “Digg It” or like it, sharing the link with their followers. This creates a swell of viral marketing and pass-alongs at no cost to the company posting the link. StumbleUpon works in a similar fashion.

CMO states that although it’s tough to get your company’s content links shared by users of either site, once they do, it’s like hitting a grand slam. It’s worth the effort to use both sites.

How to Maximize Social Networking Sites for Customer Acquisition

Digg and StumbleUpon capture the power of viral networks in social networking. As your link is shared, thousands of potential new customers view the content and the link. The viral marketing effect exposes your content to people who might not otherwise have found it online.

To maximize exposure, here are some tips to generate Diggs and StumbleUpon pass-alongs:

Open accounts on both Digg and Stumble Upon
Complete your profiles
Every time you publish your blog, new content to your site, or content marketing articles, add the URL to the sites
Create catchy titles that draw the reader’s interest
Post consistently….the more your content is seen, the more chance you have for viral marketing

Although you cannot control social media campaigns for acquisition as you would an email or direct mail campaign, you should still track response rates and test various methods and messages to determine which produces the best result. With time and consistency, your efforts may pay off through maximum low or no-cost marketing exposure on social networks.

Executive coach Randi Raskin Nash says that if you want to get things accomplished before the end of the year, you need to be smart about it. SMART is an acronym to keep in mind when setting goals, personal or professional. There are actually many effective variations for what it stands for, but here’s one that tried and true: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. A quick Google search will yield other variations (e.g., Significant, Motivating, Agreed Upon, Realistic, and Trackable) since SMART goal setting has been around for quite a while. However you spell it, it’s a great place to begin in working towards setting and achieving what matters most to you.

So how does SMART work? Here’s a look at the five parts of the goal-setting mnemonic:

Business Coach

Step One – Specific: Raskin Nash says the goals you set should be concrete and as specific as possible. For example, if you want to increase your sales, you should figure out a specific goal you want to achieve, like “signing on four new clients” (specific) who “meet a certain criteria” (spell out to be even more specific), not “increase my client base” (not specific).

Step Two – Measurable: When setting your goal ask yourself, “how will I know I’m on track, how will I know I’ve succeeded?” That’s the Measurable part of your goal. For example, if you want to increase your networking contacts, promise to go to one new event a week for 2 months, and introduce yourself to at least five new people. That’s more measurable (and more specific!) than just saying that you want to meet more people. Even better, consider measurable ways in which you will follow up with those new people to create win-win relationships.

Step Three – Attainable: Be realistic. You’re setting yourself up for failure if you come up with a goal that is impossible to achieve, like losing 50 pounds in six weeks. Instead, come up with a goal like losing, say, 10 pounds over that time frame. The executive coach says, “Don’t make it so attainable that you already have it, it’s a goal… so stretch, but know it’s possible so you can build momentum by achieving it.”

Step Four – Relevant: Is this a goal that really matters to you? Is it relevant to your dreams, your vision, your values, your priorities? Raskin Nash says, “If you’re going to take the time to set SMART goals for yourself, personally or professionally, make sure they’re really on point, really focused on what’s important to you.”

Step Five – Time-Bound: Come up with a specific time frame to complete the goal. For example, Raskin Nash suggests using the time between now and the end of the year as a “good time to position yourself” and get specific goals off your to-do list and/or set yourself up for success in the New Year.

Here’s another variation of SMART… SMARTER: E for “Evaluate” and R for “Redo if really needed.” Periodically evaluate your goals to ensure they’re in line with your priorities, and, if not, redo them, but keep them SMART!

If you really think about it, you cannot possibly make enough money to reach your financial freedom by just being a regular employee. If you want to really get rich, you must start thinking big. You must seriously consider running your own business and getting people to work for you — this is simply the recipe to earn more money.

However, what they say is true — everything starts with a single step. If you don’t have enough experience and relevant background just yet, it’s better if you can start by building a small business. This can prepare you in handling bigger responsibilities in the long run.

Small Business Ideas

When choosing the best small business for you, it is highly recommended that you go with those ones that you are deeply passionate about or an expert on. Remember, you’ll be spending lots of your time growing your business and the last thing you’ll want to happen is to dread going to work everyday. If you choose something that is aligned to your areas of interest, you’ll most likely to feel that you are not working at all. Based on your skills, knowledge, and passion, you can choose any of these top 10 great money-making small business ideas:

1. Start a freelance writing service in the online and offline arena.

2. Offer coaching or consulting services in the field that you are an expert on.

3. Become a virtual assistant (reply to emails and phone calls, write marketing messages, do link building services, etc. for your virtual clients).

4. Sink your teeth into online affiliate marketing (this is one of the most lucrative fields in the online arena today).

5. Start a retail or specialty store in your neighborhood.

6. Try buy and sell. (You can also do this online through auction sites like eBay).

7. Spa and wellness center.

8. Franchise small fast food chains.

To increase your chances of succeeding in this field, make sure that you acquire certain knowledge as to how you can run your business. You must know how to attract prospects, how to properly market your products and services, how to decide on your tag prices, and ultimately, how you can outplay your competitors. You will need to be determined and you will need perseverance and truck load of patience especially if you are just starting out. Remember, the road to success could be bumpy but you’ll be able to get there as long as you have determination and motivation.

There is something special that takes place when someone makes a decision to do something in developing a home based business. I’m talking about the kind when we say to ourselves “I will until, whatever it takes” in building a home based business. There seems to be a huge difference between 99% and 100%. I’m not exactly sure why, nor if the road to an absolute decision means we stay at that 99% level for a while because that does seem to happen. Either way there is something incredible that happens at 100% to your freedom income.

We all know the story of the General who, after landing all of his soldiers on shore, burned the boats so there was no way to retreat. He told the soldiers “Win or die”. They won. That was an absolute decision. Same thing when you decide to build your home based business and have success no matter what it takes.

I have seen the difference that 1% makes in this industry many, many times. That 1% seems to be the difference between success and mediocrity quite often. It’s that 1% that fools the maker but not the universe. Sometimes we hold a little back, just in case.

Home Base Business

Why do we do that? It’s that mindspeak that we use on ourselves that seems more comfortable. You know what I mean, the back-up plan for failure in case we can’t seem to make that monthly residual income high enough. We can fool ourselves but not the law of the universe. Fear and doubt attracts negatives. Perhaps the worst part of this is that most of the time there is no real reason for being fearful or doubtful. Our perceptions of the negatives that could happen are usually very distorted and blown out of proportion. This just seems to be part of human nature as it relates to building a home based business.

100% decisions attract the right things. For example, my friend Cameron approximately 2 years ago, near the end of July, his buddy Rick made a 100% decision; he was going to find a serious builder and go to work with that person. My friend called him the week after. There are no mistakes, things don’t just happen. Then he made an absolute decision. There is no back-up plan, I WILL until. I absolutely believe that is what you need to have to build a long term sustainable residual income in a home based business. Many people have paid their dues along the journey and continue to pay their dues. That little 1% makes all the difference in developing a residual income or what I like to call a Freedom Income. It stops us from looking back and hesitating in doubt. That 1% makes us say “Next” quite easily when someone turns us down. That 1% releases the tension and stress from negative results because they are only temporary in terms of building a home based business. There is a calmness that comes through a resolute decision because it makes the person absolutely focused and confident. Entrepreneurs make absolute decisions all the time about their home based business. Yesterday we watched a program about two people that have mortgaged their homes and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a business venture catering gourmet food to train commuters in Boston. That was an absolute decision. It’s also a leadership decision. Absolute, no holds barred, decisions create that peaceful residual kind in a home based business. When someone makes that kind of decision it is easy to see. They do the things that others won’t do because they have decided to win the game and achieve their goals in creating a sustainable residual income for their home based business.

I ask all of you to examine your decisions and see if you are at 99% or 100%. Don’t let that 4 letter word called “fear” hold you back from having a great life. Talk to somebody about it and be certain that there isn’t something missing from your resoluteness and purpose. That 1% makes all the difference, it attracts the right things. It creates the “Right Stuff” in the maker.

Have a great week everyone

Many years ago I had a friend who was extremely intelligent, had a photographic memory, and finished university with top marks in business administration. He had all the credentials to get a great job.

Sounds good for the most part, wouldn’t you say!! Maybe even a nice boy who you would want to marry your daughter!! Shortly after finishing school he landed a job working for the owner of this large company, whose business did millions a year in revenue.

Business Coach

The person he worked for was old world, very little formal business education, and built a wonderful business from scratch. He was shrewd person with tons of business experience under his belt. After working there awhile my friend decides that he can really make a difference in this man’s business.

Here is what he actually did:

He goes into the employer’s office and asks if he could speak with him, the man says sure. He starts explaining that the way he is running the business is wrong. He enlightens him by reciting certain paragraphs out of the text books he studied at school, and tells him that is the way a business should be run.

The Employer’s reaction:

The Employer looks at him and says: I can see you are a very bright boy who has studied hard at school and learned everything about business. The question I have to ask is, if I am doing business wrong … how come I have been in business for 30 years , never finished high school, supported my family, sent my kids to university. The difference with experience is you do not always believe what you read!!! You need to use your gut sometimes to know what is really right. I thank you for the education, but if it is all the same to you, I would like to continue the way I have been.

My opinion

I am a firm believer in education especially if you are going to be a doctor, a lawyer, or even a business person. When people study to become a doctor they must intern to get the practical experience needed to practice. Business is very different and can not be learned strictly through books and exercises.

If I was considering going into business for the first time, had very little experience, here is what I would like to happen for myself. I would hope to work for someone prior, who had years of experience, who would be willing to take me under their wing, and teach me real world business, and how to be savvy.

Networking events are the premier way in which individuals can meet new people, make quicker connections and expand their influence. These events can create platforms for improving communication, business growth and professionalism. Depending on the type of event, individuals usually receive a RSVP requesting their presence. Rsvp is a French term which means, “Repondez s’il vous plait”. Translated into English to mean, “Respond as it pleases you”. Individuals can use their Rsvp as a way to enhance their business and social endeavors.

Listed below are novel and helpful tips for utilizing your response for big success.

Networking

Confirm your attendance as soon as possible

It is a form of etiquette and courtesy to respond to a RSVP. It shows that you professional and respectful. Make it a point to always answer a RSVP, whether you are attending the event or not. A RSVP signals the host or organizer of your commitment and participation to the event. It allows them to prepare a place for you and make the proper arrangements for a successful function. This may include ordering the right amount of food, having the correct number of seating arrangements or right amount of materials. It eases the planning processes for the organizer or host of the event.

There are several advantages for making a timely RSVP. The individual can easily be notified of current information about the event, as well as last minute changes. You are guaranteed a place in the event and can reduce additional charges for last minute registration. It can also create a professional image when your name tag is properly printed or your name is on the registration sheet in its proper order. It also reduces confusion or any mishaps on payments and placement the day of the function.
